To provide fast local rerouting to deal with transient link failures with minimal changes to the current networking infrastructure.
In case failure is occur in the network then local recomputation of new shortest paths are calculated without the failed link, since other nodes not aware of the failure.
A packet is guaranteed to be forwarded along a loop free path to its destination.
